Why do we say queer instead of LGBTQ+?

The term "queer" challenges societal norms and binary understandings of gender and sexuality. Historically used as a derogatory slur to marginalize and discriminate, PowerFolx joins a movement to reject the stigma and reclaim this term as a demonstration of our community’s history and resilience. “Queer" is a flexible term that encompasses a wide variety of identities, including those that don’t fit neatly into the categories represented by the letters "LGBTQ+." This flexibility allows for an ever evolving understanding of gender and sexuality. Being open to anyone who identifies as queer means that PowerFolx does not demand that its students have picked labels, determined identities or claimed affiliation. PowerFolx welcomes you, no matter where you are in your journey, to join us in embracing our history, identities and place in the martial arts community.

Jiu Jitsu students need workout clothing that is not loose or does not easily pull in any direction. Examples include leggings, board shorts, rash guards, close fitting athletic t-shirts, etc. Students who want to roll (spar) should also bring a mouth guard.
All students need to come to class with shoes that easily slip on and off to wear when using the restroom. No shoes are worn on the mats and shoes must be worn in bathrooms.
